I co-authored the book The Late Talker and was asked to write which 5 books I’d recommend that can help parents just starting a journey with a child that’s a late talker or who has apraxia, and why. I’d recommend these five books.
For background as my two sons were young when I wrote my book, I also wanted to share updates about my boys, the ones who inspired me to write the book The Late Talker.
My 25-year-old son Tanner who’s been diagnosed with apraxia dyspraxia hypotonia sensory processing disorder dysarthria etc is doing amazing today,! When he was little and the public school tested him (inappropriately) I was told he would never make it in a mainstream kindergarten class and advocated to get him into the mainstream where he thrived and became an honors student.
Tanner just graduated from UCF where he was on the Dean’s list and is currently working at a deli for publics in Orlando Florida and taking the LSATs because he wants to go to law school to be a special education attorney to help other children find their voice just like he found his
My 27-year-old son Dakota who had traumatic birth injuries which cause torn neck muscles crushed facial nerves and he was in therapy from birth overseen by a neurologist with developmental cognitive deficits early on is also doing amazing today. After a rough start where they were measuring his limbs and not knowing if he would have permanent cognitive deficits he later was only just diagnosed with ADHD and CAPD… And then was also diagnosed as gifted so twice exceptional. He graduated from Savannah college of art and design and is currently working in marketing for Wyndham resorts.
Having two sons with special needs when they were little I used to read chicken soup for the soul to give myself inspiration and I’d sometimes read it to the boys to inspire them too, and now my boys are my personal chicken soup for the soul.
